BC CORRECTIONS BRANCH

The mission of the B.C. Corrections Branch is to increase public safety through offender management and control. This mission is consistent with government priorities and the service delivery plan of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

The Branch is organized into two divisions: Adult Custody which operates correctional centres with various levels of security and control for individuals awaiting trial or serving a provincial custody sentence; and Community Corrections and Corporate Programs which operates 53 probation offices across the province.

The division also provides expertise, co-ordination and support to all parts of the Corrections Branch through research and program development, information system and contract administration. The division is responsible for strategic, and capital planning. It is also the corporate link to other branches, ministries and agencies.


BRITISH COLUMBIA 'E' DIVISION

The BC "E" Division provides provincial, federal and municipal policing to the province through 126 detachments, with more than 6,500 police officers, or regular members. There are over 9,500 RCMP employees in B.C. including public service employees and civilian members. Many municipal employees, auxiliary constables and volunteers also help in the day-to-day operations of "E" Division.

The "E" Division is the largest in Canada as it represents approximately forty percent of the total RCMP force. In fact, the RCMP polices all but 12 municipalities in B.C., and it’s been in the province since 1950 when it replaced the B.C. Provincial Police.

BRITISH COLUMBIA SHERIFF SERVICE

In 1974 nine existing county sheriff offices were merged into one provincial department called the British Columbia Sheriff Service (BCSS). Under the control of the Ministry of Attorney General, deputies provide court security, plan high security trials, transport prisoners, manage juries, serve court-related documents, execute court orders and warrants, and assist with coroner's court.

Today, with 450 officers province wide, the British Columbia Sheriff Services has become a highly effective organization, which focuses on maintaining a safe environment for our justice system.

BURNABY FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Burnaby Fire Department (BFD) proudly protects the citizens and visitors of one of the most populated urban centers in British Columbia.

The BFD currently has 260 uniformed Firefighters who work in the cities 6 stations that are strategically located across the cities 98.60 square kilometers (38.07 square miles) jurisdiction.

The BFD has been a vital part of the cities past and will play an even greater role in providing safety for their citizens in the future.

CANADA BORDER SERVICES AGENCY

Since December 2003, the CBSA has been an integral part of the Public Safety Portfolio, which was created to protect Canadians and maintain a peaceful and safe society. The mission of the CBSA is to ensure the security and prosperity of Canada by managing the access of people and goods to and from Canada.

The Agency is responsible for providing integrated border services that support national security and public safety priorities and facilitate the free flow of persons and goods, including animals and plants that meet all requirements under the program legislation.

Correctional Service of Canada

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) plays a vital role in ensuring Public Safety for Canadians. CSC is the federal government agency responsible for administering sentences of a term of two years or more, as imposed by the courts and is an Agency of Public Safety Canada. CSC has a presence from coast to coast - from large urban centres with their increasingly diverse populations, to remote Inuit communities across the North and is responsible for managing over 12,000 offenders in institutions of various security levels and supervising over 8000 offenders under conditional release in the community.

The Pacific Region of the Correctional Service of Canada operates 10 federal institutions, including one facility for women offenders, a Community Correctional Centre and five parole areas in British Columbia including the Yukon Territory. The Pacific Region employs over 2,500 staff including Parole Officers, Correctional Officers, Program Officers and as well as other operational and non operational members.

ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (RCMP)

The RCMP is the Canadian national police service and an agency of the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada. The RCMP is unique in the world since it is an International, National, Federal, provincial and municipal policing body. They provide a total Federal policing service to all of Canada and Provincial policing services under contract to the three territories, eight provinces (except Ontario and Quebec), approximately 720 Detachments, more than 200 municipalities, 165 Aboriginal communities, three international airports and numerous smaller airports.

The RCMP is broken into four RCMP regions Canada-wide: Atlantic, Central, Northwest and Pacific Regions. "E" Division, along with "M" Division in the Yukon, make up the Pacific Region. Its headquarter offices are located in Vancouver.


VANCOUVER FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES

The Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS) is committed to providing high quality, cost effective services for the people who live and work in the city. The mission of the men and women of the VFRS is 'People who care about you'. Protecting life, property and the environment in the city is our primary objective.

The VFRS is one of the busiest fire departments in British Columbia. Vancouver currently has 20 fire stations with 790 uniformed members and 31 civilian members who help protect the third largest city in Canada.

In 2005, Vancouver Firefighters responded to a total of 45,986 calls for service. Of those, 30,060 were Emergency Medical Services (EMS) calls.

VANCOUVER POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is a diverse police force, reflecting the rich tapestry of the many communities and lifestyles that make up our city. They are one of the largest municipal police forces in Canada and were recognized as an innovator in Canadian law enforcement. The VPD hired the first female officer, started the first marine squad and were the first to introduce computer terminals in police vehicles. They are leaders in computerized crime analysis, physical control tactics and organized crime investigation strategies.
